BirthMark offers two hospital-grade pumps for rental. These include the Ameda Elite and the Medela Symphony. Experience has shown us that there is sometimes confusion around whether people should purchase or rent a pump. Here are a few factors to consider:

What is a hospital-grade pump?

First things first: A hospital-grade pump is not a "rental version" of a pump that you would otherwise purchase. These pumps are larger, significantly more expensive pieces of medical equipment. They are "closed systems". This combined with the individualized milk collection kit make them safe for multiple users.

Who should use a hospital-grade pump?

Hospital grade rentals are recommended for: mothers with babies in the NICU or other separate environment and mothers who need to use pumping to establish, maintain or increase a milk supply. Often in these situations there is something going on with either the mother, the baby or the nursing relationship itself making on-going pumping a necessity. There are other situations that call for hospital grade pumps. One example is a mother who plans to pump exclusively. Each situation is individual. Call or visit to discuss your specific situation.

How long are the rentals for?

You can rent a pump on a weekly or monthly basis. Please note that while you are welcome to return your pump early, we are unable to provide refunds for early returns.

Is there other equipment involved?

Yes! You will need to have a milk collection kit, which is what will individualize the pump as your own during your rental. These are available for sale at BirthMark. If you have pumped or plan to pump while in the hospital, be sure to take your collection kit home, or you will need to purchase a new one.
