Small Group Childbirth Education

A six-week course in childbirth for small groups of 3-5 couples in a comfortable, friendly setting. Learn about how to have a safe and satisfying birth experience while building friendships that will support you through your experiences as new parents.
Week 1: Basics -- What are you afraid of?
Introductions and basic nutrition, exercise and gestational information are discussed. We will have a general discussion regarding your feelings, fears and expectations about labor.
Week 2: First Stage Labor
How it all begins, and how to tell if it is "real." We'll also talk about coping strategies and the physiology of the different stages of dilation and effacement. Various positions and comfort measures, as well as standard hospital procedures will be reviewed.
Week 3: First and Second Stage Labor
A review of first stage labor and introduction to second stage labor. Emotional and physical aspects of both stages will be covered. We'll also go over and practice different positions that will enhance the progress of labor.
Week 4: Help!
We will talk about different resources available for help during labor. The role of the partner, doula, midwife, hospital staff, as well as the birth ball, and other labor aids will be discussed.
Week 5: The Best Laid Plans . . .
Envision your dream birth, and then think about what you might do in different scenarios. Learn about all your options and discover what is important to you. We'll discuss the unpredictability of labor and birth, and the importance of remaining flexible.
Week 6: Postpartum
What to expect during your recovery physically and emotionally. We will also cover newborn care and appearance, and realistic expectations. Breastfeeding basics will also be introduced.
Dates: Six Fridays, 6:30-9:00pm, beginning with nutritious snacks and social time, with one follow-up reunion.
