Breast Pumps
We have found this to be one of the most perplexing choices mothers face. There are a number of factors to consider when choosing whether to buy or rent, and then in making the choice of which kind of pump to purchase. Questions to ask yourself include:
What is my budget?
Obviously, budget comes into play whenever shopping. At BirthMark, we do our best to keep pump prices affordable; our most popular Medela pumps are priced about $20 below the leading nationally known competitor. Within this category comes the choice of a hand pump, an electric pump, one with a bag, or a hands-fee deluxe system. Our staff can walk you through the considerations to make the choice that works for your family. A word to the wise: at BirthMark, we carry only the top, most reliable brands of pumps. While it may be tempting to spend less on a battery operated pump from a national chain, please know that while priced a little lower, these are often less effective. Mothers who purchase these pumps work harder, have less success, and are more likely to 'give up' and wean (and then spend the money on formula) or to end up purchasing the more effective pumps in addition to their discount purchase.
What is my lifestyle?
Is it important that my baby take my milk from a bottle on a regular basis?
Some mothers know that they are going to be returning to the work force outside the home, and for these families the collection and bottle feeding of milk is a priority. Others contend with physical challenges in themselves or their baby that also make pumping a necessity. Others still find it a priority for their own unique reasons. Regardless, if a mother is planning on pumping regularly and for an extended period of time, an electric breast pump with a dual collection kit is the ideal fit.
Other mothers plan to pump now and then for "date night" or the occasional bottle. In these cases, a hand held pump like the Harmony, both small and inexpensive, can be all that they need.
Yet other mothers have no plan to work outside the home or spend any extended time apart from their babies. These mothers should feel confident that unless a challenge arises, they really shouldn't have a need for a pump.
What are my goals for breastfeeding?
Does she plan to breastfeed for six months? A year? Longer? Does she plan to breastfeed another baby in the future? As with any other purchase, the goals can have an impact on which piece of equipment is the best match. This is another factor to discuss with our staff when purchasing your pump.
What is my body type?
Most importantly, what is the size of my nipples? Mothers are often surprised to hear that the size of the nipple can have a significant impact upon both amount of milk collected and comfort while pumping. Just as the baby needs a mouthful of breast to successfully transfer milk, so does the pump. Because we're all different, any pump should have the capacity to swap out "flanges" or "breastshields" (depending on the brand) to ensure the proper fit.
